Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Male, The Maldives

White sand beaches, crystal clear seas and an underwater world waiting to be discovered; welcome to the Maldives! Upon arrival at Male International Airport, you’ll be greeted by our reps and transferred via taxi and boat to the guest house in Villimale. Settle in after your flight before taking your first steps on the sands of this suburban paradise. This evening will be the perfect opportunity to meet your new friends.

Day 2 – Meet save the Beach

Today, you’ll gain a real insight into the importance of The Maldives’ ecosystems and reasons to protect it’s fragile environment. As we join with Save the Beach, you’ll discover the quieter side of life by exploring the smaller island of Villimale’. It’ll be a real eye opener into the conservation work that’s being carried out.

In the afternoon we’ll take part in a beach clean – this improves coastal and ocean ecosystems by ensuring that litter doesn’t kill marine life or is toxic enough to disrupt the aquatic life cycle. It’s incredibly rewarding to help the local community and you’ll enjoy some well earned snacks from the local cafe on the beach.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 3 – Save the Beach – Impact Day

Being in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives provides a fertile ground for the transfer of planktonic larvae of reef organisms and other marine life across the Indian Ocean. It’s for this reason that we get so involved with Save the Beach.

Throughout the day, you’ll take part in some of the following activities. These activities are designed not only to support the community and the environment, but also to increase your own knowledge of marine life and conservation.

Daily tasks are varied and depend upon the needs of Save The Beach at the time, it may include:

  • Conducting reef surveys
  • Cleaning the coral frames/assessing coral health and updating an online database
  • Coral planting

Meals: Breakfast

Day 4 – Explore the Capital of Male & Transfer to Dhiffushi

It’s a busy one today, travellers. We’ll visit the fish market, local market, Friday Mosque and the President’s Palace, as well as discovering a few spots off the beaten track. We’ll then travel by boat to the island of Dhiffushi.

We’ll cruise through the Ocean by boat, so keep your eyes peeled and camera’s at the ready for some marine life!

Meals: Breakfast

Day 5 – Dhiffushi Island Exploring

After breakfast, you’ll head out with a guide to explore Dhiffushi, a small island surrounded by lagoons and sand bank islands. You’ll learn how the locals live and the importance of the ocean to their lives and livelihoods. By the end of the day, you will have an understanding of practices that are damaging the marine ecosystems and what can be done to prevent this.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 6 – Snorkelling & Optional Scuba Diving

Grab a snorkel and prepare for wrinkly fingers and toes, as you head out by boat on a snorkelling trip. With around 2500 reefs, the Maldives is the ultimate destination for those who love underwater adventures. You’ll have a guide alongside to make sure you feel safe in the water and they’ll also point out marine life that may have missed.

There’s also the optional opportunity to complete a Discover Scuba Diving course in the afternoon – Extra Cost

Meals: Breakfast

Day 7 – Snorkelling, Sandbank & Dolphin Cruise

Today there’s another chance to explore life under the sea as we head out snorkelling. We will stop at a sandbank for a picnic lunch with time to swim or snorkel in the lagoon, or just lie back and relax.

We’ll then head back to Dhiffushi, cruising the Indian Ocean in search of dolphins as we go.

Later that afternoon, get into teams and prepare for a volleyball match!

Meals: Breakfast

Day 8 – Island Cleanup – Impact Day

We all know the impact we face everyday dealing with plastic, so today is the day to make a real difference. We’ll join forces with members of the local community to complete a beach clean-up. This will include sorting, preparing for collection and recording findings before rewarding ourselves with an ocean swim and an afternoon at the beach – time to top up that tan!

Here at Camp Maldives we think it’s essential to do our bit to help the communities we visit, and once you see the beauty of the islands, you’ll want to help keep them that way.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 9 – Chill / Beach Day

Today is yours to spend as you wish!

Spend the day topping up your tan at the local beach or get involved with some of our recommended optional tours! Your guide will be able to help you plan any extra activities you want to get involved with such as reef diving, snorkelling or a trip to one of the Maldives world-renowned luxury resorts!

Did someone say stilt houses and infinity pools? Nothing screams the Maldives more than a luxury resort… which is why we’re giving you the opportunity to visit the beautiful resort for a full day of living like a true celeb!*

*Resort trip comes at an extra cost of $120-150 – inclusive of drinks, a luxury buffet lunch, club access and return transfers. *Price subject to change based on available resorts allowing day trips at the time*

Meals: Breakfast

Day 10 – Tree Planting – Impact Day

SEAGRASS PRESENTATION
Despite being one of the most valuable ecosystems on the planet, sea grass is considered unsightly, and is often deliberately removed. Through this presentation we hope you will understand the importance of sea grass and why we call it the hero of underwater protection.
Following the presentation we will venture into the lagoon to discover and identify sea grass.
FLORA & FAUNA PRESENTATION
When it comes to plant and animal life in the Maldives, what usually jumps to mind is the vast diversity of marine life. However, the land itself has been shaped by the tropical climate and boasts 260 native plants despite its somewhat less than perfect soil and several fascinating small animals. Find out more through this overview and learn where to look!
We also take some time to leave our mark and plant coconut palms

Meals: Breakfast

Day 11 – Local Culture

Before heading out on a fishing trip, we’ll spend some time with the locals to really understand the Maldivian culture. You’ll play Bashi (a sport created and played by local women), learn a few key phrases and use rope knotting techniques to repair and build furniture.

Now time for the fishing trip, you’ll meet the fishermen at the harbour and learn how to fish the traditional way using just a line.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 12 – Island Exploring

Transfer by early morning ferry to Thulusdhoo where the rest of the day is free for you to do as you please. Wherever you go in the Maldives sunsets are epic, but our favourite spot to enjoy them is on the Western side of Thulusdhoo. As a group, we’ll walk there this evening and enjoy the view. The colours are amazing, so make sure to pack your camera.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 13 – Stand Up Paddle Boarding or Kayaking

This morning you have the opportunity to learn how to kayak, or go stand up paddle boarding. With an instructor, you’ll practice the skills on land before putting them to the test on the water. This is one of our favourite days for sea, sun and fun.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 14 – Island Clean Up – Impact Day!

Enjoy a leisurely morning on the beach. Optional activities or water-sports available. Jet Ski anyone?

In the afternoon, join forces again with the local community for another beach clean up. Beach clean ups are an extremely important event to help mitigate the problems caused by ocean debris and danger inflicted on marine life as a result of plastic pollution, so it’s important we do our bit on Camp Maldives.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 15 – Beach Day!

Another day in paradise. There’s a gorgeous white sandy beach at Thulusdhoo and today is yours to make use of it. Feeling wild? Why not take advantage of the many watersports options, including surfing, jet skiing or kayaking.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 16 – Local Cooking Class

This morning a local Maldivian will demonstrate how to make mashuni and roshi, two famous local Maldivian dishes! This will be an opportunity for you to test your skills at making both as well as tasting the food you make.

This afternoon, enjoy some free time to do some more snorkelling, chill at the beach, or get involved with some optional activities such as island hopping or water sports!

Meals: Breakfast

Day 17 – Hurra Island Day Trip

A trip to the Maldives wouldn’t be complete without learning about the fragile ecosystems. On today’s ferry trip, you’ll get a real taste for local island life. As you go, local guides will kindly share their extensive knowledge on the mangrove swamps.

We’ll even learn how to dry and cure fish, as well as taste fresh rihakaru paste (a thick brown fish paste, made from tuna) – like marmite, this one’s a love or hate delicacy. We’ll spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing on the beach before returning to Thulusdhoo.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 18 – Snorkelling Tour

Rise and shine, we’ve got a snorkelling trip to go on. Get your cameras ready, and be on the hunt for wildlife as we sail through gorgeous reefs before discovering the underwater world of the Maldives.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 19 – Rooftop Pool / Beach Day & BBQ

Can relaxing on the beach, swimming in the rooftop pool and sipping on coconuts ever get boring? We didn’t think so. That’s why today is yours to kick back and chill.

Tonight we’ll enjoy a BBQ on the beach and you can soak up one last sunset in the Maldives. Send those final friend requests and give all your friends a big hug, because tomorrow you’re homeward bound.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 20 – Departure Day 🙁

And just like that, it’s all over. After breakfast, we’ll transfer by vehicle to the airport for your departure.

Cultural Considerations

Here at Camp Maldives we provide local island experiences off the beaten track. Getting off the tourist trail isn’t for everyone, but In our opinion it’s the best way to travel and will provide you with a truly unique experience. With that comes certain cultural considerations that you need to be aware of.

So please take a read of the below and let us know if you have any questions.

Alcohol

As an Islamic nation, Maldivians do not consume alcohol and it’s not readily available. It is found in a few Island hotels. However In short you probably won’t come across it on the local islands we visit, so please be respectful of the local culture around alcohol consumption and don’t make this the priority of your trip.

Culture & Dress Code

As a Muslim country, there are dress code considerations that need to be followed during your trip around local islands. When around water, the local community or out in public, please stick to the following: It’s acceptable for men to wear T Shirts and shorts or swim shorts. Females should avoid causing offence by having a conservative dress code to by wearing T Shirts, loose shorts or sarongs. Bikinis are not allowed to be worn on local island beaches or around the local community and we require our guests to dress with modesty on all LOCAL TOURS. You will be allowed to wear bikinis in certain areas on some of the activities and our reps will advise you along the way.

Accommodation

The accommodation used on our local island experience programs are chosen to provide a balance of good service, comfort and value for money and a local experience. We do go off the beaten track in our program and it’s not designed to be a luxury tour with resort stays.
